Airfields provide ideal conditions for many species of bird – warmth, space, food and few humans – and it is no surprise that many birds seek to make their home on such areas. However, an aircraft bird strike can have catastrophic results –loss of life, and damage to the aircraft. Effective bird control and management for airports and airfields is crucial to help prevent the threat of birdstrike.
In a defence context, the threat is compounded as runways must be accessible at short notice 24/7.
Damage to aircraft or airside services will result in expensive delays due to downtime for repairs and loss of business while the aircraft or facilities are out of action.
With over 2,000 bird strike incidents recorded every year by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), bird strikes are a significant threat to aircraft safety. Bird strikes have also been linked with many aircraft crashes, which often result in fatalities.
In order to correctly and efficiently address the problems of birds on airfields, we recommended a specifically designed and implemented Integrated Avian Pest Management (IAPM) programme, which we will design and implement for the specific problems on the airfield.
The IAPM (Integrated AvianPest Management) programme will include proofing – spikes, netting etc. – to deter the birds, in conjunction with our ant-bird hawk patrols. These patrols utilise birds of prey – hawks and/or falcons – to move the pest birds from the area, due to the presence of these predators. The use of these birds of prey (collectively known as hawks) is very cost effective and environmentally friendly, and helps reduce the cost of proofing, which can be prohibitive.
